It's been a while since we've dipped our collective toes into the American Avant-Garde cinema here at The Sound the Past Makes, so let's take a look at Ken Jacobs' Little Stabs at Happiness starring, among others, Jack Smith of Flaming Creatures fame. I first saw these films, and many others of the New American Cinema, at free screenings that the Austin Film Society held in the 1990's-fond memories of so many strange and exciting films, particularly Kenneth Anger's Scorpio Rising and Christopher Maclaine's The End, which I'll post at a later date.
I'll be back soon with a fresh new mix! In the meantime here's a favorite mix from two years ago, March 2012, that you might have missed entitled Darker ThanYou Think it covers the years 1980-84
For the annotated track listing (original post) click here and below after the Little Stabs at Happiness film, you can watch videos for two of my favorite tracks in the mix, Squeeze's beautiful "Vanity Fair" and Elvis Costello's "Watch Your Step"-which should hopefully convince you to download the whole thing!
